Piano Keys Are Back!!

25 May 2011

I have just posted PDF’s that contain all of my Piano Key borders and Chevron corners on my website on the Digitized Designs page.

There are a total of 11 border patterns and 5 corner patterns.  The cost for each pattern is $5.  2 of the border patterns (I and J) have never been posted before.

Each border pattern is 6 inches tall.  Over time, I will be adding 4, 8, 10 and 12 inch tall versions of anything that includes pearls as they do not resize well in height.  I also have many more versions on paper and will be adding additional types over the next few weeks.

If interested, please send me a quick email to quiltjulie10@verizon.net and tell me which patterns you’d like.  I can accept PayPal or a personal check by mail.  Your patterns will be emailed as soon as payment is confirmed.

Thank you for your interest!

Adorable FWA Quilt!

09 May 2011

Every year for the last 4 or 5 years, we've had the privilege of working with a local school named Fort Worth Academy.  They have an annual spring carnival, and each grade level does their own thing to help raise money.

Kindergarten is always responsible for a quilt.  Over the years, the ideas have been many and varied.  We've done photo quilts, crayon quilts, applique quilts - you name, and the idea has come our way.  The fun part is that the parents responsible for the ideas very rarely have alot of quilting experience, so we have spent many hours turning those ideas into real quilts.

I have to say, of all the quilts that have been completed, this year's is my absolute favorite.  The parents involved decided they'd like to do a handprint quilt.  If you haven't seen one of these, you have to Google it.  They are adorable!

They came armed with their list of blocks, children that would complete each block, paint colors etc.  I provided the background fabric and away they went.  A few short weeks later, they returned with adorable hand and foot printed blocks.

I set the quilt, and then quilted it and had it bound.  Then I returned it to them for the final embellishing. Here's a link to a SmileBox creation showing the finished product.  While I can't take credit for the complete project, I sure am happy to have been a part of it!!

Please note - the SmileBox presentation says I'm the one who created it, and I'm not.  One of those very creative parents at FWA did and emailed it to me!!

Enjoy!

Telephone Books

05 May 2011

Today's quick blog is about something that's driven me crazy for, mmm, YEARS!!  How many of us use a real, touchy feely telephone book on any sort of regular interval anymore?  I know I haven't, and I'm betting that with advances in technology, there's alot of other folks that haven't either.

But the telephone company still delivers them.  Without fail.  Sometimes as many as 2 or 3 each year.  I pick them up off the front porch, and move them directly to the recycle bin.  No passing go, no collecting $200, and certainly not hitting any permanent space in my house.

Then, as if delivering a 3 lb hunk of junk that I don't want isn't enough, they call - sometimes repeatedly - to ask me, using an automated system, if I've actually rec'd my telephone book.  Can we say stupid??

Enter the Ft. Worth Star Telegram.  They've figured out that a huge number of people are getting their news in some other form than the newspaper.  Did they brainstorm and come up with some new, amazing idea to gain a more savvy new consumer?  NO!  They decided to print, and deliver, at no cost, to target neighborhoods, a complete newspaper full of ADVERTISING!!

Again, I pick them up off the front porch, and move them directly to the recycle bin.  No passing go, no collecting $200, and certainly not hitting any permanent space in my house.

Does anyone realize how many trees are being cut down for this?  If either of these companies really wanted to make a difference in the lives of real people, they'd stop wasting the earth's resources for things that have outlived their usefullness.  They'd start a 'request' line and publish the phone number so folks who really want telephone books or advertising (news)papers could get them, without mass producing landfill fodder.

Ok, I'm going to get off my soapbox now!

Kids Being Creative

03 May 2011

I figured it was about time I get back to my blog.  I'm not the best about keeping up simply because there are only so many hours in the day.... However, things here are slowing down (yea!), and I'm going to make more time to work on some things that I really want to.

Today I wanted to share a link to a video that includes several children from my daughter's school.  They worked in a project last Oct.  The assignment?  Make Oscar (a book character who just happens to be a weinie dog) a costume that had all of the following elements:

  • Cylindrical in shape;
  • Non-embarrassing; and
  • llows Oscar to move as quickly as possible.

Needless to say, they came up with some pretty great ideas, and I hope you'll enjoy the video.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate everyone’s support for my ALS Foundation fund raising efforts.  I am overwhelmed at the huge response from some a huge number of folks!!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I thought you might like to see another one of the available patterns stitched out, so I decided to use it on a 2010 Thimbleberries Club quilt for my local quilt store.  If you’d still like to donate, follow this link:
